Analyses of intrinsicality in terms of naturalness

Over the last thirty years there have been a number of attempts to analyse the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic properties in terms of the facts about naturalness. This article discusses the three most influential of these attempts, each of which involve David Lewis. These are Lewis’s 1983 analysis, his 1986 analysis, and his joint 1998 analysis with Rae Langton.

Improved Higgs naturalness with or without supersymmetry

Many models of electroweak symmetry-breaking with an extended Higgs sector exhibit improved naturalness, wherein the new physics scale, at which quadratic divergences of Higgs mass parameters due to top quark loops are cut off, can be pushed beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider without unnatural fine-tuning. Such models include examples where the new physics is supersymmetry, implying ...

Intrinsicality and grounding

A number of philosophers have recently claimed that intrinsicality can be analysed in terms of the metaphysical notion of grounding. Since grounding is a hyperintensional notion, accounts of intrinsicality in terms of grounding, unlike most other accounts, promise to be able to discriminate between necessarily coextensive properties that differ in whether they are intrinsic. They therefore prom...

Naturalness (final)

In the wake of David Lewis’s seminal paper ‘New Work for a Theory of Universals’ (1983), a certain use of the word ‘natural’ has become widespread in metaphysics and beyond. In this usage, properties can be classified as more or less natural, with perfectly natural properties as a limiting case. For example, Lewis would claim that being negatively charged is much more natural than being either ...

New probe of naturalness.

Any new scalar fields that perturbatively solve the hierarchy problem by stabilizing the Higgs boson mass also generate new contributions to the Higgs boson field-strength renormalization, irrespective of their gauge representation. These new contributions are physical, and in explicit models their magnitude can be inferred from the requirement of quadratic divergence cancellation; hence, they ...
